Just a Note, Metallic Koi Card

Hello! Today I have this shimmery koi fish card to share. I used the Koi Pond stamp set by Catherine Pooler to create this elegant card. These koi fish remind me of going to our local zoo. Feeding the koi fish was one of my son's favourite things to do when he was little, so when I saw this set, I picked it up.

I wanted to catch the shimmery beauty of these fish and I thought the best way to accomplish that was to use a dark base.

In order to get a crisp, clean embossed image without stray embossing powder, I prepared my black A2 sized (4.25x5.5) cardstock panel using The Rabbit Hole Designs Cottontail Embossing Tool. This tool has truly been a game changer for me embossing on dark cardstock. It works so well! I stamped my fish images using versamark embossing ink, then covered them in gold embossing powder. I dumped off the excess then heat set the powder.

Next, I went in with metallic watercolors in a reddish orange and also a white to colour both koi fish. You don't have to use watercolour paper because you are not adding a lot of water to the paper.

The coloured fish on the black background was beautiful but I felt it needed a little bit more to it. So, I stamped the fish onto some copy paper, fussy cut them out, then laid them over the coloured fish. I then splattered gold coloured watercolour over the panel.

I then gold embossed the sentiment onto black paper. Making sure to remember to treat the paper first with the Cottontail embossing tool. I then trimmed it down and adhered it onto the panel.

When I went to adhere the panel onto my white A2 sized card base, I found the white border to be a little too stark, so I backed the panel on an A2 sized piece of pearlescent vellum. Then I adhered the whole thing onto my card base. This toned down the brightness of the white card base and matched the white metallic of the fish well.

This was such a fun card to create. I really love how beautiful metallic watercolours look on black. I hope that this card inspires you to try watercoloring these beauties!! Thanks for visiting!
