Dead Before Caffeine

Welcome! It is the last day of this months new release and inspiration blog hop! Aren't all the new Caffeinated Critters awesome? I love them all but this vulture is my personal favourite of this release. I wanted to give him a gloomy, moody background to match his attitude.

To achieve a moody background, I used Nuance Powder by Magenta in Ocean. It is a water soluble pigment dye that explodes with colour when water hits it. First, I masked a square shape on an A2 (4.25x5.5) watercolour cardstock panel using a low tack tape. To get a good square, I die cut one from a square die from my stash. I placed it in the position I wanted on my watercolour panel then used it to align my tape on the panel. I made sure to cover the whole area of the panel that I wanted to remain white so no stray pigment would mark it up. When I had my square marked off, I used a 3/4" flat brush to wet the open area. I then sprinkled on the powder and watched the magic happen. Add more powder or water as needed to get the colour to cover the whole square. I also used a smaller brush to guide the colour ensuring that I would have a distinct border. I set the panel aside to dry. To remove the tape without it tearing the watercolour paper, I used my heat gun to warm the tape up a bit. The tape peels off easily when it is warm. Go slowly. Next, I stamped my vulture in black onto white cardstock. I coloured him up using my Prismacolor pencils using different shades of warm gray. Sand, and eggshell for the beak and feet, browns for the branch. Then I die cut him out using the coordinating die and adhered him to the dry panel.

I stamped the "#deadbeforecaffiene" sentiment directly onto the panel in black ink. Then, I heat embossed the "keep calm & carrion" sentiment onto black cardstock using white embossing powder over the Versamarked words. I made sure to use the new Cottontail Embossing Powder Tool first so that I would get virtually no stray powder on the black cardstock!! Then I trimmed the sentiment and adhered it below the first sentiment.

Now I was ready to adhere my panel onto an A2 black cardstock pa nel. Then onto my A2 card base. I am so happy with how this card turned out. I love how grumpy and moody this vulture looks! Thanks for visiting! Next up on the inspiration hop is my super talented friend Tangii !
